Employment Dynamics and Urban Povery in Ethiopia

Research Institutions:

Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, Netherlands and Kiel Institute, Kiel, Germany

This PEGNet project investigates employment dynamics in urban areas using firm level panel data from Ethiopian manufacturing firms. The objective is to examine the interfirm variation in job creation and destruction based on different firm and idustry characteristics. Further analysis will be done to indentify the relative importance of firm entry versus expansion for job creation, and the relative importance of firm exit and firm constraction for job destruction . This will allow us to assess the quality and stability of jobs created by small, medium and large firms which will have important implication for urban poverty.

In particular, examining the four rounds of Urban Household Surveys in Ethiopia (1994, 1997, 2000, 2004) this project focusses on urban poverty in Ethiopia as most of the research effort has focused on rural poverty and little is known about the nature and characteristics of urban poverty.
