The Role of Geographical Indications in Reducing Vulnerability to Poverty

Research Institutions:

Institute for Environmental Economics and World Trade, Leibniz University of Hannover, Germany and Kasetsart University, Thailand

Summary:

Having better protection on geographical indications products has been discussed for years in Thailand. Until now, some specific products such as silk or especially Thai Jasmine Rice/Hom Mali Rice have been registered as GIs at the EU. This project aims at collecting and gathering data in Surin where geographical indications for Thai Jasmine Rice/Hom Mali Rice were firstly registered. The first field trip collects data in selected areas of parts of the Thung Kula Rong-Hai Region, namely Roi-Et, Mahasarakam, Srisaket and Yasothorn. These cities have registered Thai Jasmine Rice/Hom Mali Rice as GI-product named TKR Hom Mali Rice two years after the first registration for Thai Jasmine Rice in Surin.

For analysing the synergy effects of expanding geographical indications to other areas, a second field trip collects data in Bureerum where the high quality Thai Jasmine Rice/Hom Mali Rice has also been cultivated but yet does not have any registration as GI-product. These survey areas are situated in the poorest region of Thailand, namely in Northeastern Thailand.
