Online event - The role of social protection in cushioning the effects of pandemics

The COVID-19 pandemic puts enormous pressure on economies and societies world-wide that in particular affect low and middle income countries. Social protection schemes could limit these negative effects and hence prevent poverty to increase.

  • But what kind of social protection policies have been most effective in cushioning the effects of the pandemic?
  • Which ones could improve the resilience of people in low and middle income countries in the future?

Christoph Strupat and Markus Loewe (both German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE)) will discuss these and more questions in the virtual workshop on "The role of social protection in cushioning the effects of pandemics" together with Garima Sharma (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Christian Oldiges (University of Oxford), Kevin Donovan (Yale University), and Kibrom Tafere (World Bank). The event will take place on 29 January, 3-5 pm CET and will be jointly organised with the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE).
